We have an opportunity for a Data Science and Modelling Engineer to join our digital teams, creating leading-edge solutions to optimise decision-making across our asset business and trading activities, and model future asset investment and market scenarios.

What we are looking for

As a Data Science and Modelling Engineer, you’ll create novel algorithms to solve complex energy domain challenges, push the boundaries of technology application within Uniper, build your domain expertise, and work with colleagues to build production-scale software solutions.  

 

Powerful algorithm engines are at the heart of many of our most valued digital products. The following are therefore just some of our project examples: 

  • For live operational assets, your capabilities will be harnessed across challenges ranging from plant anomaly detection and asset pattern recognition, to asset maintenance and performance optimization. 
  • With modelling and optimization techniques fundamental to Uniper’s future asset investment analysis, you will also have the opportunity to model the energy systems of tomorrow – working at both the leading edge of innovation in the energy sector, including technologies such as batteries and non-conventional renewables, and building your knowledge of market mechanisms. 
  • Building decision-support tools and solutions supporting power and gas trading activities across a range of markets. 

 

The role will focus on data science and modelling algorithm development, but the ideal candidate will have experience with and/or motivation for working closely with users and stakeholders to build domain expertise, and back-end software development to progress algo innovation into production-scalable solutions.  

 

The role is based in the UK with hybrid working and opportunity for face-to-face collaboration with colleagues across our European offices.  


You’ll be responsible for: 

  • Proactively working with experts across our engineering and market domains to understand current and future challenges in energy, and building statistical and machine learning based solutions that can be taken into productive use.  
  • Both prototyping standalone solutions to prove a concept and progressing these into production solutions in larger software products.  
  • Working in agile scrum teams alongside software engineers, testers, product owners and domain experts to build and support leading-edge software products with intelligent engines at their core.  
  • Understanding different mathematical, statistical and machine learning methods, their pros, cons, benefits and risks when being applied so the best approaches are selected for a problem.  
  • Write routines to pre-process data so optimal results can be delivered by selected methods.  
  • Combine different statistical, mathematical and machine learning methods to create an algorithm ensemble.  
  • Participating in and conducting code reviews, collaborating with peers and knowledge-sharing to drive continuous improvement.   
  • Lead client and user interactions, building relationships with colleagues across our international business areas across Uniper.  

 

 

Who we are seeking

The post holder will have: 

  • A good mathematics/statistics, computer science/technology, physics, engineering or related degree 
  • Python programming skills.  
  • Database querying skills 
  • Drive to learn and improve 
  • Strong problem solving skills 
  • Tenacity and determination 
  • Ability to work effectively and flexibly as a member of a team and seek guidance from others within the team.  

 

Desirable: 

  • Knowledge of optimisation techniques (especially linear programming) 
  • Knowledge of the energy industry 
  • Casandra, Solr, Spark knowledge.
